An often overlooked part of WordPress SEO is how you handle your images. By doing stuff like writing good alt tags for images and thinking of how you name the files, you can get yourself a bit of extra traffic from the different image search engines. Next to that, you’re helping out your lesser able readers who check out your site in a screen reader, to make sense of what’s otherwise hidden to them.

Using the proper alt attributes for images is also something that is checked in the Page Analysis functionality of our WordPress SEO plugin.

We put a lot of time on this, which will give us positive effect in time. It is very important to start making this task regularly – once or twice a month for the new images.

Rule for changing alt & title

On every image we firstly get the title and add it into alt text. We add only the keywords from the title and only with small letters. After that we add the content from the image, if it has. We also add only the keywords from the content and again only with small letters.
